How To Drum Up New Business Using LinkedIn Signal | LinkedSelling
LinkedIn Signal just might be the new ?IT? for finding new prospects.
At first it may not seem like the sexiest prospecting tool around but I?m here to tell you it is extremely powerful.
For those who don?t know what Signal is, it?s an aggregated feed of all the posts, updates and content posted from everyone on LinkedIn. Why should you care about this? Because you are able to see posts from anyone on LinkedIn whether you are connected to them or not.
That?s right, you can see an update from a 3rd degree+ connection halfway around the world from you.
LinkedIn?s search engine is awesome. With the right keywords or search phrases, and carefully using their search filter, you can get updates and business intelligence from people who are ready to do business right now.
This almost feels like shooting fish in a barrel.
And sometimes it is.
But trust me, as with all things you?ll have to spend some time tweaking your tactics in Signal to get some results. Once you perfect your approach you should be able to pick up some leads relatively quickly.
When you head over to Signal the first things you are going to see are the updates from your 1st degree connections.
While those are certainly important, you?ll want to see more than just those updates and you?ll also want to narrow the search results of the type of posts you?re seeing.
As an example, if you are looking to sell products to businesses in the construction industry then you could search for a term like ?construction purchaser? or ?construction procurement.?
Once you click enter on the search you?ll be able to add 2nd and 3rd degree connections to the results.

Some of the results you?ll see will be people updating new job titles and position skills. Sometimes these people are just updating their profile. But other times they are ?newly hired? and are probably looking to make an impact on their business quickly. ?Therefore, they may be more open to do some business.
Other results will include people who are looking to buy a certain product and if your product/service fits the mold, Voila! You have a legitimate lead.
There are search terms you can use to find new prospects who are posting these kinds of direct requests for a product or service.
You can use phrases like ?I need a,? ?I am looking for,? ?I need to find? and so on. These terms are not going to give you the specific results you want, but it?s just the first step.
You can couple those search terms with the ?industry filter,? to zero in on only those posts relevant to your industry. Now you?re likely to get some meaningful results out of those search phrases.
If you are only looking for local prospects you can search by location as well.

Keep in mind that your searches don?t have to be keyword phrases.
You can look for companies and even specific people. ?When they post something, you?ll be able to see it in your feed.
This tactic is useful for more than just sales. It can also be a great way to get consulting work or even a new job.

In addition to simply viewing these results, in most cases you can comment on the posts directly, even if you aren?t connected to the person who created the post.
This gets you immediately involved in conversation with prospects. ?Hopefully by now you?re seeing why Signal can be such a great prospecting and sales tool.
Once you?ve figured out what search terms/phrases are giving you the best results, you can save your searches.
Make sure you have all your filters set before you save the search.
Once saved, you?ll only need to spend a few minutes each day looking for the new updates and determining which are the best leads to pursue.
Do not sleep on this tactic.
Even though many are slow getting to the table, more and more people are finding out about Signal and how to utilize it for their business.
Don?t be the last one to this party.
What You Should Do Next
- Spend a half hour crafting a plan.
- Put 5-10 searches in place for your own?LinkedIn marketing campaign.
- Set aside 5 minutes each day for the next 2 weeks.
- Use that time to review the various items in each search feed, every day.
- Engage where appropriate.
- Re-assess your efforts at the end of the 2 weeks. ?Which search terms are providing results? ?Where do you need to adjust?
- Rinse and repeat.
Stick with this approach and soon enough you?ll be finding new prospects and generating real business.

Mad cow quarantines lifted at 2 California dairies
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Quarantines were lifted on two Central California dairies associated with a case of mad cow disease after investigators found no link between the illness and food the diseased bovine might have consumed, federal officials said Friday.
Tests performed by the World Organization for Animal Health also confirmed what U.S. labs had found: The cow had a random mutation of the illness that was unlikely to affect other cows in the herd.
The tests were part of an investigation begun in April when an examination of a carcass of a nearly 11-year-old cow taken to a Hanford rendering plant tested positive for mad cow disease, the nation’s fourth case and the third “atypical” strain to be discovered.
Mad cow disease is a deadly affliction of the central nervous system that can be transmitted to humans who eat meat from infected cows.
The rash of cases that occurred in Great Britain in the 1990s were caused by cattle being fed protein supplements made from the spinal columns and brains of diseased cows, a practice that has since been banned.
The California cow had what is known as atypical L-type bovine spongiform that scientists know happens occasionally.
In the disorder, a protein the body normally harbors folds into an abnormal shape called a prion, setting off a chain reaction that eventually kills brain cells.
Scientists say they do not yet know what causes this strain of the disease. The incubation period is two to eight years.
The USDA tests 40,000 of the 35 million cattle slaughtered annually for BSE, but some public health experts have called for more aggressive testing, especially in light of Friday’s announcement.
“If that’s true, then it’s even more important to increase surveillance since the feed ban could not be expected to prevent future cases,” said Dr. Michael Greger, director of public health and animal agriculture with the Humane Society of the United States.
He said adopting the European model of testing all older cattle, or the Japanese model of testing every cow slaughtered for human consumption would add mere pennies per pound of beef sold and lower the risk of human cases of the fatal disease.
As part of its investigation, the FDA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture examined feed records at the affected dairy and identified at least 10 suppliers. They said Friday that all were in compliance with regulations.
The California cow, which came from a still-unnamed Tulare County dairy, had been unable to stand when she was euthanized and hauled away to a plant that renders carcasses into animal food protein and other products.
Dairy operators are not required to report if their cattle contract neurological diseases.
Investigators with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the USDA’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service were still working to track down at least a dozen other living cows that were raised on a calf ranch with the sick cow. Calves taken from their mothers after birth are fed a protein supplement made from slaughtered cattle blood, and some question whether that blood might carry BSE.
Already investigators have tracked down two offspring of the diseased cow. One that was euthanized for testing turned out to be healthy. Another calf was stillborn within the last two years, but officials have not yet said what happened to the carcass.
Baker Commodities, the rendering plant where the diseased cow was discovered, is a voluntary participant in the USDA testing program.

Hundreds of protesters marching through Chicago
CHICAGO (AP) ? Thousands of nurses and other protesters gathered Friday at a downtown Chicago plaza for a noisy but largely peaceful demonstration demanding a “Robin Hood” tax on banks’ financial transactions, before a smaller but more raucous crowd broke away and began marching through city streets.
The marchers chanted slogans and taunted police, who followed on bicycles and on foot. Police horses blocked some intersections as the breakaway groups wound through the city.
Friday’s demonstrations were the largest yet ahead of a two-day NATO summit that is expected to draw even larger protests.
Members of National Nurses United, the nation’s largest nurses union, were joined by members of the Occupy movement, unions and veterans. City officials have said the event could draw more than 5,000 because of a performance by former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, an activist who has played at many Occupy events. Early crowds did not appear to be that large.
The nurses and their supporters dressed in red shirts and wore green felt Robin Hood caps with red feathers. There were few problems at the rally, though police arrested at least one demonstrator as the gathering broke up.
About a dozen police officers, some wearing riot gear, surrounded the protester, who was dressed entirely in black and identified himself as a 19-year-old from Albuquerque, N.M. Police handcuffed him and walked him away from the rally on Daley Plaza.
Deb Holmes, a nurse at a hospital in Worcester, Mass., said she was advocating for the tax but also protesting proposals to cut back nurses’ pensions.
“We’ve worked 30 years for them and don’t want to get rid of them,” she said.
The rally ? which originally was scheduled to coincide with the start of the G-8 economic summit before that summit was moved from Chicago to Camp David ? drew a broad spectrum of causes, from anti-war activists to Occupy protesters and Cathy Christeller’s nonprofit Chicago Women’s AIDS project.
Christeller, the agency’s executive director, said there is common ground among all protesters, even against the backdrop of the NATO summit.
“The whole … idea we should slash the (social) safety net instituted here and in Europe ? It’s a disaster,” she said. “It ignores the source of the economic downturn, and it’s making people suffer unnecessarily. This brings us together,”
Mary O’Sullivan and Chris Fogarty held the same signs that they carry every week. The retired couple have been protesting together for more than a decade, and Mary has carried the same sign for years, taping over “Honk to indict Bush” to read “Honk to indict banksters.”
She said NATO “leaves rubble in their wake.”
Ben Meyer, a Chicago lawyer who was observing the protest for the National Lawyers’ Guild, denounced what he called an excessive police presence at the rally, which included dozens of officers milling through the crowd and lining the perimeter, some of whom were videotaping the rally.
“It’s frustrating the state needs to come out and show this much force for a nurses’ rally,” he said. “They have everyone from the superintendent on down here. It’s just ridiculous.”
Chris Phillips, an Occupy activist from Buffalo, N.Y., said two police officers seized a wooden flag pole he was using to fly a flag reading “coexist” while standing on a bench on Daley Plaza. Officers told him the pole was considered a weapon.
“Did they read my flag? It’s clearly a peaceful protest,” he said. “I didn’t hurt anybody. Are you kidding me?” Phillips said. He planned to protest nonstop for the next 4 days.
Meanwhile, lawyers for NATO summit protesters said police on Friday morning released four of nine activists arrested Wednesday on accusations that they had or planned to make Molotov cocktails.
The lawyers said police, with their guns drawn, raided an apartment building where activists were staying and arrested nine people. The Chicago chapter of the National Lawyers Guild said officers broke down doors in the building in the South Side Bridgeport neighborhood and produced no warrants.
The Chicago Police Department refused to comment.
Many office buildings in the usually bustling Loop business district were closed after workers were warned to stay home because of heightened security, snarled transportation and the possibility of unruly protests.
Other small protests, including one targeting climate change, are also planned.
Shawmaf Khubba, a student at Montclair State University in New Jersey, took a 14-hour bus ride on Thursday with 40 others to join the Chicago protests. He said he wanted to raise awareness and tough questions about what he called NATO’s unwarranted military aggression around the world.
“NATO is a strong arm of the U.S. that gives an excuse to go everywhere around the world,” he said before Friday’s rally. “I’m here because I care about what happens to people around the world.”
Scattered protests over the past week have been relatively small, including a march Thursday through the “Magnificent Mile” shopping district that drew about 100 people.
Estimates of how many might show up Sunday for an anti-NATO march have varied widely, from a couple of thousand to more than 10,000.
Police and the Secret Service have taken no chances as heads of state from 50 countries begin arriving for the NATO summit, where leaders will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.
Security is high on trains. Barricades and fences have been erected around landmark buildings, and streets are being closed.

NHT SuperPower (With PVC-PC)
NHT, the high-end audio manufacturer, has made an excellent consumer-level stereo PC speaker set, but like many offerings from hi-fi companies, the speakers are sold ??la carte. The NHT SuperPower (With PVC-PC) consists of two speakers you must buy individually, along with the PVC-PC (Passive Volume Controller for PCs), which is also sold separately. It’s easy to buy these things all at once on the company’s site, however. For a grand total of $497 (direct), you get an excellent stereo speaker pair for listening to your computer’s music. It also doubles quite competently as a monitor system for home studios. Audiophiles in search of a near flat-response stereo speaker pair for their PCs and mobile devices should read on.
Configurations and Design
A full-blown package deal does exist if you want to buy the SuperPower subwoofer and the speakers?the PVC-PC and speaker stands are part of it, and that total comes to $749 (direct). Since the speakers don’t really need the sub in order to deliver quality audio, however, we’ll focus on the more affordable stereo pair, which, without the PVC, will cost you $398. Here, we chose to review the speakers with the PVC, as the box acts as an easy volume control. Without it, you rely on your computer or mobile device to control the volume at the source. This is obviously not hard to do, but the box makes it easier to adjust the volume more quickly and precisely, with excellent interchannel accuracy, so you can be sure both speakers are outputting the same decibel level.
Measuring 9 by 5.5 by 6.8-inches (HWD), the NHT SuperPower’s glossy black finish is simple and sleek?and recalls the original, passive SuperZero NHT debuted in the 1990s. The SuperPower looks equally at home on a desktop as a PC speaker set or next to a flat-panel television as a modern home theater system. The black cloth speaker grilles feature the NHT logo at the bottom, and are removable, revealing the 4.5-inch midrange driver and 1-inch silk dome tweeter. Each speaker is self-powered and thus requires its own power cable and an outlet nearby. The connection for the cable on the back panel is next to the Power switch, which again, each speaker has. The only other connection on the back is an RCA line input. The speakers ship with a 3.5mm-to-RCA split cable, so you can plug your computer or mobile device directly into the speakers?or the PVC-PC. The PVC-PC has RCA inputs for the left and right channel, as well as a 3.5mm input for each channel. The outputs are also RCA and 3.5mm for the same channels.
Performance
Even without the subwoofer, the NHT SuperPower packs some low-end presence. The bass response is definitely of the tighter, less booming variety, so if you do want the sub-bass thunder as well, you’ll want to add on the subwoofer. Without it, the speakers sound crystal clear, with a powerful mid-range and low frequency response that stays very clean even at extremely high volumes.
On deep bass tracks like The Knife’s “Silent Shout” and Thom Yorke’s “Cymbal Rush,” distortion does eventually creep into the equation at top volumes, but this is almost insignificant, as the SuperPower’s 90 watts per channel allow it to get much louder than a typical computer speaker pair.?Listening at comfortable or even very loud volume levels, the speakers remain distortion-free. It is only at top-volume, louder than you’ll likely ever need them to be, that the SuperPowers start to rumble a little bit on deep bass.
Classical music, like John Adams’ “The Chairman Dances,” sounds fantastic on the speakers, with a lovely, subtle resonance imparted to the lower register strings. The percussion on this track, as well as Bernard Herrmann’s castanet-laden score for the Vertigo nightmare sequence, sounds pristine and beautiful without ever becoming overly bright.
The speakers are great for all genres, in fact?hip hop, rock, electronic music, jazz, classical, and folk all sound wonderful on the SuperPower. What’s great about a no-frills system like this is the focus is purely on sound itself, not a wireless streaming feature or built-in docking station. The sound delivered is audiophile worthy, nearly-flat response, with a nice subtle low-end boost. This clean delivery of sound makes the SuperPower not only ideal for musical listening, but also music creation?these would make an excellent pair of home studio monitors.
Conclusions
For all of its sound quality, it’s understandable if the SuperPower’s need to be cobbled together is a minor annoyance. For almost the exact same price, another high-end audio manufacturer has made a PC speaker pair that has everything you need right in one package?the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 ($499.95, 4 stars). However, the Audioengine 5+ ($399, 4.5 stars) is our current Editors’ Choice for this price range, and while it’s quite comparable to the NHT SuperPower, its sound signature is even more audiophile-friendly, with few embellishments in any part of the frequency range.
If the price of the above systems is holding you back, consider one of our favorite PC speaker systems, the Editors’ Choice Harman Kardon SoundSticks III ($169.95, 4.5 stars)?at less than half the price, this 2.1 system offers compelling audio perfomance, but, like the MM-1, it’s less suitable for home studio use.
Also in this lower price range is the excellent Antec SoundscienceRockus 3D 2.1 Speaker System ($199.99, 4.5 stars), another 2.1 system (and Editors’ Choice) that delivers great value and exciting audio. NHT’s SuperPower speakers, however, are fantastic as well. Any audiophile seeking a no-nonsense system will likely be happy with the two speakers and the Passive Volume Control?and if you seek a little more thunder and are comfortable breaking the $700 price barrier, the SuperPower subwoofer lives up to its name.

Getting older and going, or going back, to work
Source: U.S. Government Accountability Office
By Allison Linn
The tough job market has been so hard on some Americans that they have dropped out of the running altogether.
But here?s a surprising twist: Generally, that?s not been true of older Americans.
The labor force participation rate, or the number of Americans who are working or looking for work, has declined in recent years for every age group except those who are 55 and older, according to a report released this week by the Government Accountability Office.
Older Americans generally have a lower labor force participation rate than other age groups, and for good reason: That?s the point in life when most people retire.
But the percentage of older Americans who are choosing to remain in the labor force, or to get back in it, has steadily been rising over the past 20 years and even continued to increase over the course of the recession and recovery.
About 40 percent of workers age 55 and over were working or looking for work in 2011, the GAO analysis found, compared to about 30 percent in 1990.
That?s in contrast to young and prime-age Americans, who have seen declines in labor force participate rates in recent years.
Ninety-two-year-old May Lee has been working for the State of California for more than 70 years, has served under 10 governors, and has no plans to call it quits. Early TODAY’s Lynn Berry reports.
A closer look at the data shows that the real increases are coming from some of the oldest workers. Phillip Levine, an economics professor at Wellesley University, noted that labor force participation among 55- to 64-year-olds has generally been flat in the last five years, at about 64 to 65 percent.
But for workers 65 and over, labor force participation has increased from 15.5 percent in 2007 to 18.4 percent now. Levine?s analysis was based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
There are a number of potential reasons why the labor force participation rate has increased for people who we traditionally think of as being in retirement age.
One explanation may be that older workers are choosing to work longer to make up for investment losses and other financial woes as a result of the recession. Some people age 65 and older also may be getting back into the labor force because they can?t make ends meet on Social Security and retirement savings.
The GAO report said other factors keeping older workers at work may include better health and life expectancies, the increasing number of older women in the labor force and the need to stay at work to retain health benefits.
That a larger chunk of older people are working doesn?t diminish how tough the recession has been on people aged 55 and over, Levine notes.
Although the unemployment rate for older workers has generally been lower than the broader population, a job loss in that age range can be particularly devastating. That?s because it generally takes older workers longer to find a new job, and that long gap in employment just before retirement age can have a harsh impact on their retirement plans.
The GAO report to the Senate?s Special Committee on Aging focused mainly on the effect of long-term unemployment on older workers.
For many Americans, the dream of a worry-free retirement remains elusive. NBC’s Anne Thompson explains why.
In testimony before the committee last week, the National Employment Law Project noted that many older workers face the double-whammy of a big employment gap and a resume that gives away their age. Both can be a turnoff to some potential employers.
Levine, who has done extensive research into older workers and the recession, said?many people in that age range are ?limping across the finish line.?
?They find some way to make ends meet from whenever they lose their job at 58 or whatever, and finally when they get to 62, Social Security provides them with a lifeline,? he said. ?It provides a means of getting by.?

TV’s 5 biggest canceled shows
By Joal Ryan, E! Online
Sonja Flemming / CBS
David Caruso and Jonathan Togo on the now canceled “CSI: Miami.”
A procedural drama with a bigger audience than the renewed “CSI: NY.” A teenage drama with a bigger audience than the renewed “Gossip Girl.” A crime show with a bigger audience than almost everything.
Here’s a rundown of some of the top-rated TV shows that got axed as the broadcast networks unveiled their new fall schedules:
1. “Unforgettable”: A Top 25 show, the one-and-done Poppy Montgomery series was TV’s most-watched drama or comedy to rate a pink slip. But like “Rob,” another show offed by CBS despite a similar- and good-sized audience of about 12 million, “Unforgettable” appears to have been punished for being the weakest link, relatively speaking, on an otherwise powerhouse night for the network.
More from E: Check out Connie Britton’s ‘Nashville,’ Scott Speedman’s ‘Last Resort’ and more
2. “CSI: Miami”: In its 10th season, it averaged 10.5 million viewers, not far off from its ninth-season performance. At the same time, it was not far behind “CSI” (12.4 million) and was a bit ahead of “CSI: NY” (10.5 million), both of which are coming back. Speculation on its demise has centered on its production costs.
3. “Terra Nova”: The freshman dinosaur drama was declared dead in March, but its audience of 10 million viewers still looms large, and larger in fact than every Fox series, canceled or renewed, save for “American Idol” and “The X Factor.” The closed-down “Alcatraz” (9.6 million viewers) was Fox’s second-biggest snubee.
4. “Missing”: ABC didn’t take out a bigger show than the midseason-launched Ashley Judd thriller, which averaged 8.9 million viewers but lacked for a young-adult audience as badly as Kathy Bates’ “Harry’s Law” (8.9 million viewers). The latter series, by the way, wasn’t just NBC’s most-watched cancellation victim, but also the struggling network’s most-watched scripted series overall.
5. “The Secret Circle”: With 2.1 million viewers, the only CW drama with a bigger audience than this forsaken freshman series was its lead-in, “The Vampire Diaries.” Once again a series seems to have suffered for being awarded one of its network’s golden time slots.

Because Drinking and Gaming Are A Great Combo

If you?re a geek who loves both alcohol and gaming, then you?ll certainly love Arkeg. The system is pretty sweet as it comes with 69 games, a 5 lb CO2 tank, a 24? hi-def LCD, a sweet sound sound system and, of course, a nice big cabinet to store the keg of your choice. On the other hand, for almost $4000, a few six packs and an X Box could be just as good.
